French designer Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance recently exhibited three collections at New York gallery Demisch Danant during NYCxDesign. The showcase, titled Made In Situ, highlighted European vernacular craft traditions and the unity between craftsmanship and natural processes. Duchaufour-Lawrance’s pieces ranged from furniture lined with bark to beeswax candles where the wax becomes part of the candle, all inspired by his experiences in small European communities.

The collections included Chêne & Liège, which featured furniture made with bark from the oak cork tree, showcasing the designer’s focus on natural processes. Another collection included panels of Portuguese tiles painted and shaped by the artist, representing different points on the coastline between Brittany and Portugal. The final collection showcased beeswax candle holders crafted based on propellor-making techniques that the designer experienced in a factory in Peniche, Portugal.

The showcase aimed to bring together different vernacular traditions and illustrate the beauty of discarded materials, all while engaging with social and environmental issues. Duchaufour-Lawrance acted as a translator between the traditions and his audience, creating pieces that reflected his unique perspective on design and craftsmanship.
